Lord Of Shadows by Cassandra Clare | Non-Spoilerish Review/ Rant

Hey Ho Bookaholics!

Feels Alert!

Lord Of Shadows Book Cover.jpg
Goodreads Summary:

Would you trade your soul mate for your soul?

A Shadowhunter’s life is bound by duty. Constrained by honor. The word of a Shadowhunter is a solemn pledge, and no vow is more sacred than the vow that binds parabatai, warrior partners—sworn to fight together, die together, but never to fall in love.

Emma Carstairs has learned that the love she shares with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, isn’t just forbidden—it could destroy them both. She knows she should run from Julian. But how can she when the Blackthorns are threatened by enemies on all sides?

Their only hope is the Black Volume of the Dead, a spell book of terrible power. Everyone wants it. Only the Blackthorns can find it. Spurred on by a dark bargain with the Seelie Queen, Emma; her best friend, Cristina; and Mark and Julian Blackthorn journey into the Courts of Faerie, where glittering revels hide bloody danger and no promise can be trusted. Meanwhile, rising tension between Shadowhunters and Downworlders has produced the Cohort, an extremist group of Shadowhunters dedicated to registering Downworlders and “unsuitable” Nephilim. They’ll do anything in their power to expose Julian’s secrets and take the Los Angeles Institute for their own.

When Downworlders turn against the Clave, a new threat rises in the form of the Lord of Shadows—the Unseelie King, who sends his greatest warriors to slaughter those with Blackthorn blood and seize the Black Volume. As dangers close in, Julian devises a risky scheme that depends on the cooperation of an unpredictable enemy. But success may come with a price he and Emma cannot even imagine, one that will bring with it a reckoning of blood that could have repercussions for everyone and everything they hold dear.

Huge June Book Haul!

Hey Ho Bookaholics!

I went book shopping!! I don’t usually dedicate a day or a particular shopping trip to exclusively shop for books, but on Monday I splurged and bought a total of 13 books. I went with three other book loving friends who for the first time didn’t spend as much as me on books.

June Book Haul.jpg

This haul may not seem that big but I did buy all of these books in one day, and I set myself a personal budget of $100; which with everything else I bought that day did not really stick.

10 Years of City Of Bones (and 10 things Shadowhunters have taught me)!

Hey Ho Bookaholics!

Welcome back to another Storytime Wednesday! It feels like forever since I’ve just sat down at my computer and written a post for this blog.

As of about a week ago, I’ve gotten back on Tumblr – after lots of phone drama – and just yesterday I discovered that it is the 10 year anniversary of the wonderful piece of literature that is City of Bones.

City Of Bones by Cassandra Clare, Published 2007, Simon & Schuster.

Why Do We Own Multiple Editions of The Same Book??

Hey Ho Bookaholics!

I got this idea from the two copies of Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare I own. You see, and I’m sure you can all relate; I’ve never read the second copy. I bought the first copy online when it first came out and I read it in 3 days, but when I purchased the second one, it was a cover buy, impulse decision because of how pretty and exclusive the cover was, and also the fact that it was hardback, signed, and had a map! This book now sits on my shelf, and though I am very proud of it, it got me thinking: why do I even have it if I haven’t read that exact copy?

There are multiple reasons why I keep the fist edition of Lady Midnight as well as the second more fancier edition:
– two different cover artworks;
– both are signed;
– I read the first one and it is quite sentimental to me;
– it’s my first ever Cassandra Clare book!

I think it may be the act of owning or even purchasing another book that increases the appeal of having multiple copies of the same story, it gives us the same sense of triumph as collecting a new item in a collection, like Pokemon cards – still the same cardboard card but different Pokemon hence different worth.

What Books Do You Have Multiple Copies Of And Why Do You Keep Them?

Stay Happy, Healthy, and have a Lovely Night!!

Thank You so much for reading and I hope to see you all back here again Saturday 🙂

Book Challenge May 13

Considering I buy all my books based off of their covers, I really don’t own any books (so far) with covers that I totally disagree with so for the Good Book, Bad Cover prompt, Beneath The Skin was my only contender, due to its absence of a dust jacket.

Naked books are pretty and all but the cover art on books is so much prettier! But as I have mentioned numerous times, both on this blog and on Instagram, this book is freeking amazing and everyone should read it, dust jacket or no dust jacket.

Book Challenge May 10

Partial Books = Partial Shelfie.

In the darkness lurks the dangerous books, that will trap you within their pages, keeping you entranced by the words so carefully crafted together by the fine hands of an author, who’s life purpose is to sell to you the tools for your own destruction.

I squealed like a little girl and have no regrets.

A few weeks ago I received a package wrapped in thick cardboard stamped with the Book Depository logo. As I (carefully) tore open the packaging – which was hard work for some crazy reason, so it took me almost 5 minutes to get the flap open and the whole side of the box fell back to reveal….

The spine of Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare!!!

It was such a great relief to finally have the book in front of me, I kinda just stared at it for a few seconds, before emptying the box and flicking through the box.

On the left are the contents of the box; 7/8 colouring bookmarks (from the new collection based of art therapy books), Lady Midnight in hardcover, a one-month free subscription to audible and a $35 Hello Fresh voucher.

On the right is the second page of the book, signed by Cassie. I was in excitement overload by the time I finished hugging the book, so I nearly died when I saw this.

The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in the first novel in Cassandra Clare’s newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series. Lady Midnight is a Shadowhunters novel.

It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.

Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…

Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?

Glitz, glamours, and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare’s Dark Artifices series.

(Description taken from Goodreads)
 OH MY HOLY MOZZARELLA!!! THIS BOOK WAS EVERYTHING I EXPECTED AND MORE!! Cassandra Clare really loves curses. Let’s just say that much. From the ending of City of Heavenly Fire and whenever Emma and Julian were mentioned in Tales of The Shadowhunter Academy, It had become painfully obvious that they were destined to fall into a forbidden kind of love, especially after Julian tied himself to Emma with the most powerful bond a Shadowhunter can make. The parabati ceremony was done so Emma wasn’t taken away from the Blackthorns; but at what cost to Julian’s heart?
So it seems Julian’s heart and mind were torn between regretting ever becoming parabati with Emma and being greatful that because of his decision, she had been allowed to stay. It ate at him everyday, when eventually he couldnt take it anymore and kissed her. He kissed her so hard and full of love, that they were breathless and invigorated, craving the touch of one another until one thing lead to another… and they ended up sleeping on the beach. LETS ALL BE GLAD CLARY INVENTED A BIRTH CONROL RUNE AYE? Otherwise we could have had a baby Blackstairs. Just the whole climax leading up to this scene, was intense.  I was trapped. This succession demonstrated the true bonds of parabati and how intense love for a parabati can affect the bonds of the relationship.
And then there is this whole thing with Kit, who we all were lead to assume was just the son of a nephilim-hater and con-man, who had little importance to the story. Oh how wrong I was. BECAUSE HE IS THE LOST HERONDALE!!!! Who – other than the angel – would’ve seen that coming???
Although I do not know how big a part Kit will play as he is not a descendant of Will Herondale. Considering he moved in to the institute – and there has been an evident connection between him and Ty – it would be interesting to see what Cassandra has planned for the rest of the series.
Who remembers Malcolm Fade from City of Heavenly Fire? Well I did. I remembered his as the smart but ditzy warlock, who (as mentioned in LM), sometimes ties his shoelaces together. He kept up that facade until the third (or second?) last chapter in the book until the Blackthorn kids began to suspect that their friendly neighbourhood warlock was behind the murders popping up in LA. Yep that’s right; MALCOLM FADE IS A MURDERER!!
His transformations was just so sudden. But his intentions prevented me from dispising him. I pittied him, because he thought what he was doing was the right thing. He thought he had been betrayed by everyone he loved. He died believeing this, and that is the saddest thing above all else.
And Mark. Our precious half-fey. The boy who lived in a land frozen in time, and fell in love with an outcast prince. He found freedom amongst the clouds, riding with the Hunt. BUT THE FEY GAVE HIM BCK!!! as a bargaining chip, but he was back in the arms of his loving family. There were hard times, like when he was left in charge of the chidren and let Tavvy sit in a giant bag of sugar – much to Julian’s dismay. Although he stll has the wildness of the Hunt in his eyes, he has developed into more of a shadowhunter, letting his skin bare runes again.
This post is my longest one yet. So for those who didn’t read the whole post, here is a brief run down (with spoilers).
~ It is a story that follows the Blackthorns’s and Emma, 5 years after the Dark War
~ Emma and Julian are parabati and Julian regrets it
~ There’s a kid named Kit who happens to be THE Lost Herondale (and I think there’s something between him and Ty)
~ Malcolm Fade is a MURDERER
~ Magnus and Alec have a shadowhunter child named Rafael Santiago Lightwood-Bane

The Infernal Devices

Hello Everyone!

As you may have gathered from a few of my Instagram posts, I absolutely love to read! If you don’t follow me on instagram please click on the link and check it out.

I wanted to do this for when I finished the Maze Runner series but I didn’t feel as strong a connection to that series as I have to this one. The Infernal devices was a series that my friend told me about a while ago, after I had finished reading the Mortal Instruments. The characters in the Infernal Devices have found a special place in my heart, especially William Herondale. Although it usually is rare for the reader to feel attached to the main character in a book; Cassandra Clare (author) had managed to create that relatability and also compassionate anger toward William that gives that connection between the reader and protagonist.
* * *

A while ago now, I finished the Clockwork Princess – the last book in the series – and once it was over, I just sat in awe at how the series just seemed to capture me and draw me right into the book. It seriously felt like I was living with the characters every second of my day. I just couldn’t forget them, even when I was at school, Magnus Bane would make an appearance in my head and attempt to distract me from my work.

My favourite quote from this book was spoken by the Protagonist, Will Herondale (and features in the image above);

“Sometimes, when I have to do something I don’t want to do, I pretend I’m a character from a book. It’s easier to know what they would do.”

From the very beginning of the series I was able to relate to Tessa. I felt a greater connection to her when she expressed her love for books and the sadness of leaving them behind in the beginning really got to me as I would’ve felt the same way, even if I had been rescued from evil.

With the shared love for books between Tessa, Will and I. I was more apart of their journey than ever, getting the feeling that I was one with them and not just a reader looking in on a romance built on book recommendations, meaningful quotes and handwritten poems.
